Why glasses screws keep coming loose
Eyeglass screws are tiny — typically M0.8 to M1.4 in size, smaller than a grain of rice. They hold together hinges, nose pad mounts, and frame temples under constant motion: you put them on, take them off, fold them, drop them, and sweat on them. Over time, vibration and thermal expansion work them loose.
The problem isn't your glasses — it's physics. But with the right tool and technique, you can keep them tight for months instead of days.
The #1 mistake everyone makes
Using a standard screwdriver that doesn't fit.
A screwdriver that's too big strips the head. One that's too small cam-outs (slips out) and scratches your frame. The screw falls out, bounces into the carpet, and is never seen again. Sound familiar?

What you'll need
- Precision screwdriver set — Phillips #000–#00 and flathead 1.0–1.5mm (our keychain 3-in-1 covers all of these)
- Bright light — a phone flashlight works; you need to see what you're doing
- Clean flat surface — white paper or a cloth so dropped screws are visible
- Tweezers — backup plan if the screw escapes anyway
Step-by-step: the pro technique
Step 1: Set up your workspace
Lay down white paper or a light-colored towel. Work over this surface only. If a screw drops, it won't camouflage against carpet or floor tiles.
Step 2: Identify which screw is loose
Gently wiggle each hinge and temple. The loose one will move more than the others. Common trouble spots:
- Hinge screws — connect the temple arm to the front frame (most common)
- Nose pad screws — hold the pads in place on metal frames
- Frame rim screws — on semi-rimless frames that use nylon wire + screws
Step 3: Position the screwdriver
- Insert the correct bit firmly into the screw head — you should feel it seat fully (no wobble)
- Hold the screwdriver vertically (perpendicular to the frame), not at an angle
- Apply gentle downward pressure while turning clockwise
Key insight: The pressure is more important than the torque. A firm downward push keeps the bit engaged in the tiny head. Rush this step and the bit slips — every time.
Step 4: Tighten — but don't overtighten
Turn until you feel resistance, then give it one more quarter-turn maximum. Overtightening strips threads in plastic frames and cracks thin metal. Snug is enough.
Step 5: Test and repeat
Open and close the temples a few times. If they still feel loose after tightening, the screw may be worn out (threads stripped) — replace it with one from our 100-screw assortment.
⚠️ When the screw is truly stuck
If a screw won't turn at all (frozen), don't force it. Apply a microscopic drop of penetrating oil (WD-40 on a pin-tip) and wait 5 minutes. If still frozen, the thread may be cross-threaded from a previous bad attempt — take it to an optician rather than risk damaging the frame further.
Prevention: keep screws tight longer
- Tighten proactively — once a month, give all visible screws a quick check-tighten
- Use Loctite (optional) — a tiny dab of blue (removable) threadlocker on the screw thread prevents loosening without permanent bonding
- Store properly — use a hard case when not wearing; soft pouches let frames jostle and work screws loose faster
